In plain English
The answer depends on which Wealthsimple product you are using. A custodial crypto account and a separate self-custody wallet give you different kinds of control.

- Name the product
Identify the account or wallet on your screen.
- Check control
Find out who controls the wallet keys.
- Check transfers
Confirm supported deposits and withdrawals for that product.
The precise meaning
Wealthsimple holds crypto for you in its centralized Crypto account. Its DEX feature uses a separate wallet with self custody, but that wallet has limits on deposits and access.
What does network mean?
The blockchain used for a token or transfer. Both ends must support the correct asset and network; a matching label alone does not verify a transfer.
In this guide: contents & sources
Wealthsimple has two different ways to hold crypto. Its centralized Crypto account is custodial: Wealthsimple holds crypto on your behalf. Its DEX trading feature creates a separate self-custody wallet when you make your first DEX trade.
The answer to 'is Wealthsimple a crypto wallet?' depends on which product you are using. Before buying crypto to send to your own wallet, check whether that asset can be withdrawn. Products in the same app do not necessarily have the same transfer rules.
Which product are you using?
Check which product shows your balance before looking for a deposit address or a send button. Being able to buy a token does not mean you can deposit or withdraw it.
| Question | Centralized Crypto account | DEX wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls custody? | Wealthsimple holds assets for you | Self-custody; you authorize transactions |
| Where are holdings? | Your Crypto account | Separate DEX holdings |
| Deposit path | Supported asset and network via Receive crypto | External deposits unsupported |
| Withdrawal path | Supported assets via Send crypto | Supported DEX tokens to external addresses |
NEXT LEVEL's guide to custodial and non-custodial wallets explains who can move the funds and what recovery depends on.
Self-custody does not mean unrestricted wallet access
Wealthsimple's DEX guide currently lists Ethereum as its supported trading network. It also says that accessing the DEX wallet outside Wealthsimple is unsupported and seed phrase export is not yet available. Check those capabilities directly if importing a wallet into another app is your goal.
DEX sales settle differently from simply sending a token. Wealthsimple says sale proceeds are converted to USDC and transferred into the centralized Crypto account. Selling therefore changes the asset and its location; withdrawing a supported token moves that token to an external address.
Buying centrally and sending to your own wallet
If your goal is to buy a listed asset with Canadian dollars and receive it in your own wallet, confirm withdrawal availability before funding. Wealthsimple's getting-started guide identifies Interac e-Transfer as a funding option. Check your account's availability and restrictions before relying on an immediate transfer.
The published app instructions say to select Move, then Send crypto. Select the asset, complete required verification, paste your receiving address and choose a network where offered. Review the amount and estimated fee before sending. Some destinations require a memo or destination tag as well as an address.
Review the purchase and transfer separately. Check the trade's quoted price and cost breakdown, including any trading fee, spread or small-order surcharge. The outgoing transfer has its own review screen. Keep both records so you can compare the SOL or USDC you bought with the amount your wallet received.
For a concrete stablecoin route, follow a Canadian USDC purchase and transfer with the receiving network checked separately.
Check sending and receiving USDC separately
Wealthsimple documents USDC withdrawals on Ethereum, Solana and Base. That is an outgoing capability, not permission to send USDC back on all three networks.
Its deposit documentation says each supported asset has a single deposit network and explicitly excludes USDC deposits on Solana. For an incoming transfer, open Move, Receive crypto and obtain the current instructions for that asset. Check the supported deposit table as well. Never reuse an outgoing transfer address as your Wealthsimple deposit address.
The USDC network guide explains why matching the chain name is only part of the check. Your receiving product must support the exact token version too.
Wealthsimple crypto withdrawal fees: separate the costs
A buy, sale or swap and a wallet transfer are different actions. Wealthsimple's fee schedule, updated September 24, 2026, describes trading fees, possible market-order spreads and a small-order surcharge. Active Trader status and recent executed trading volume affect the trading terms. Check the current schedule and your order's breakdown; do not apply a trading percentage to every wallet withdrawal.
For an external withdrawal, Wealthsimple displays an estimated network fee before confirmation. Compare only networks your destination supports. A lower estimate does not make an incompatible network usable.
For a hypothetical example, suppose the network fee has a CAD equivalent of $5. Against a $50 transfer value, $5 / $50 × 100 is 10%; against $500, the same assumed fee is 1%. These are invented inputs to show the fee's relative size, not Wealthsimple quotes. They exclude earlier trading costs and do not tell you to send a larger amount. Check the actual fee currency, amount and recipient quantity on the review screen.
A visible balance may not yet be available to send
Wealthsimple's withdrawal article currently states that new deposits have a five-business-day hold from the day they leave your bank account, affecting recently purchased assets. Check your account's available amount before trying to send. Asset minimums, account limits and required identity verification are separate checks.
After submitting a withdrawal, check account activity for progress. A funding hold before sending and an outgoing transfer already in progress are different stages. If the status is unclear, use Wealthsimple support with the transfer details rather than submitting repeated withdrawals.
Sending crypto to a wallet or withdrawing CAD to a bank?
Send crypto moves a supported coin or token to an external address. A bank account receives money instead: selling crypto for CAD and withdrawing that cash follow a different route. Do not paste bank account details into a crypto-address field.
Use the cash-out guide for the sale-to-CAD and bank-withdrawal workflow. It separates a trading quote, any wallet-transfer cost and any cash-withdrawal fee so you can record each cost once. Check Wealthsimple's current cash-withdrawal instructions for your account; another provider's steps are not a substitute.
A short check before your first transfer
- Check which product you are using and whether you are sending crypto out or receiving it.
- Match the exact token and network on both sides. For an unfamiliar token, verify its contract details too.
- Copy the address from the receiving product's own instructions and include any required memo.
- Check the current minimum, available balance and fee. Send a small test that meets the minimum, then confirm receipt before sending more.
- Keep passwords, verification codes, recovery credentials and private keys private. Sending to your wallet needs its public receiving address, not its seed phrase.
A few loose ends
Common questions
Do I need to sell crypto to withdraw it?
For a supported asset in your Crypto account, withdrawing crypto sends the asset itself. Selling it and withdrawing cash are separate steps.
Are Wealthsimple trading fees the same as crypto withdrawal fees?
No. Check the buy, sale or swap's cost breakdown separately from the external transfer's network fee estimate. Compare the receiving quantity on the withdrawal review screen, rather than treating one trading percentage as the total cost of moving crypto.
Why can I see crypto in my account but not send the full balance?
Check whether a deposit hold affects the available amount, then check the asset's withdrawal minimum, your account's limits and any required verification. A purchased balance alone does not establish that every unit can be withdrawn immediately.
Can I assume a supported withdrawal network also accepts deposits?
No. Check deposit support independently, including the exact asset, network, address and any memo. USDC's multiple withdrawal networks do not establish matching deposit support.
Can a mistaken wallet transfer be cancelled?
Wealthsimple describes crypto transfers as irreversible. Verify the receiving instructions and test first rather than relying on recovery after sending.
