In plain English

Interac moves Canadian dollars. What happens next depends on whether the provider credits your account or arranges a crypto purchase and delivery.

  1. Send CAD

Check the payment amount, recipient and terms.

  2. Confirm the purchase

Check what the provider is doing with the payment.

  3. Check delivery

Look for the account credit or crypto receipt you expected.

A bank payment confirmation is not the same thing as a wallet receipt.
The precise meaning

Interac moves the Canadian dollars. Your provider determines whether you still need to buy crypto or whether the order includes wallet delivery.

What does network mean?

The blockchain used for a token or transfer. Both ends must support the correct asset and network; a matching label alone does not verify a transfer.

In this guide: contents & sources

You can buy crypto with Interac in Canada, but the payment method does not tell you what happens next. Some services credit a CAD balance for a later purchase. Others use your payment to fulfil a crypto order and send the asset to a wallet.

Before banking approval, check the amount, recipient, purchase terms and destination. Bank payment confirmation alone does not show that crypto reached your wallet.

First identify what your payment does

Kraken's Canadian SOL guide describes Interac as a CAD deposit before buying. MoonPay's Interac guide describes selecting Buy, choosing Interac, approving through your bank and receiving crypto in a wallet. Paytrie's transaction documentation describes a quoted stablecoin purchase paid with an Interac reference, followed by wallet delivery.

Follow the provider's current payment instructions

  1. Set the destination before paying

Choose the asset and intended wallet. If delivery or a later withdrawal is involved, confirm that the receiving wallet supports the exact network. For an account deposit, check that your eventual crypto withdrawal is available before adding CAD.

  2. Create the deposit or purchase

Start inside the official provider account. Kraken's documented deposit path is Portfolio, Deposit, Canadian Dollar, then Interac. MoonPay instead starts from Buy and offers Interac under Pay With. Follow the flow on your own screen rather than adapting instructions from another service.

  3. Match and approve the bank payment

Check the amount and expected merchant or recipient against the order you opened. Use the exact payment reference when instructed; Paytrie explicitly requires its transaction reference. Complete banking approval in your bank's app or online banking. Do not substitute payment details supplied in an unrelated message.

  4. Confirm what arrived

For funding, check that CAD is available, then review the crypto purchase. For delivery, check the order status and receiving wallet. Save the payment record and crypto transaction record so you can distinguish payment, conversion and delivery.

Check what your CAD payment includes

Kraken explains that Instant Buy may include a spread within the quoted price as well as a displayed fee. Do not add an included spread twice. Compare the crypto ultimately delivered for the same total CAD budget.

C$100 is an example budget, not a quoted offer. Try your own numbers in the CAD estimator, then check the provider's quote before paying.

  • Funding: check any charge from the bank or provider and the CAD credited.
  • Conversion: check total CAD spent, crypto quantity, displayed purchase fees and the quoted exchange rate.
  • Delivery: check whether the quote includes wallet delivery or leaves a separate crypto withdrawal and its charge.
  • Network: verify the network and any estimated network charge before confirming the transfer.

Before choosing where the purchase will arrive, check the custody distinction between an account and a wallet you control.

If the bank shows payment but crypto is missing

Check both the bank transfer status and the provider's deposit or order status. Paytrie distinguishes awaiting payment, processing payment and sending crypto. MoonPay identifies bank declines, verification issues and security reviews as possible causes of failed or pending purchases.

Complete any outstanding verification through the official account. Do not send another payment simply because delivery is pending. For a bank transfer issue, Interac directs you to your financial institution. For help matching a payment to your crypto order, contact the provider through its official support. Confirm what happened to the original payment before starting again.

Check payment requests before you approve them

Interac warns that convincing emails and texts can impersonate legitimate businesses. Verify unexpected requests independently. Match the sender and recipient to the payment you started, and check the official order before approving. A familiar logo or an urgent request does not verify a purchase.

For a broader checklist, NEXT LEVEL explains how to recognise crypto payment and impersonation scams before sending money.

A few loose ends

Common questions

Does Interac buy the crypto for me?

Interac handles the bank payment. The crypto provider handles the deposit or purchase and any subsequent wallet delivery.

Is Interac always free or instant?

There is no single fee or completion time for the bank payment, crypto purchase and wallet delivery. Check your bank's charges, the provider's quote and the current transaction status.

Can I send to any wallet showing the same token?

Check the network as well as the token. The destination must support the network used for delivery or withdrawal.
